The Walla Walla Pétanque Club is hosting its membership drive and barbecue on Saturday, May 11, from noon to 4 p.m. at Tertulia Winery (1564 Whiteley Road). Club members will be on hand to demonstrate the game, and the public is invited to watch or play. The hosted menu will include grilled lamb and French-themed sides provided by club members. Wine will be available for purchase in the Tertulia tasting room.
The local pétanque club is an affiliated club of the Federation of Pétanque USA, and $15 of the annual membership $30 dues goes to that organization which then provides members with liability insurance.
Pétanque translates to “feet fixed or planted on the ground.” Players stand with both feet in a plastic circle while throwing a hollow metal boule (ball) as close as possible to a small wooden target ball called a cochonnet. The game is similar to Italian bocce in that regard.
The Walla Walla Pétanque Club was formed in 2006 and has both adult and junior members. It is the only pétanque club east of the Cascades and is among the largest in the state. The club generally plays on Sundays at the terrains the club built at Tertulia, starting at 11:00 a.m. during the hot season, and at 1:00 p.m. when it’s cool. The club maintains a Facebook page and interested parties are encouraged to look there for the current start time or change in play location, and for upcoming tournaments. The club’s website is www.wallawallapetanqueclub.com.
Everyone is welcome on the 11th of May, but rsvp’s are appreciated for food planning purposes (email@example.com).
